Cheers Matt! Just ordered a bunch

I’ve carried film through multiple country airport scans for 40 years and never had an issue. Rumour has it that security scanners were stronger in the past as far a film is concerned compared to modern but I don’t know the truth if that. Colour film reputedly more susceptible than B&W? A pilot was saying the other day he’d carried the same roll of film through 6 flights and was fine. We used to carry film in lead bags 30+ yrs ago for some countries that had reputation for really powerful scanners but no way you’d be allowed to these days.

Very nice to see that! I love to shoot with FP4+. But its not the cheapest Film that i can get here in Germany. The Cheapest option for me here is a 30,5m roll of Foma 100. I got mine from Foto Impex for 46 or 47 Euros. That gives you a price of 2.60 Euros or around 2.2 GBP for a 36 exp Film Roll. And if you dev your film yourself and do the scanning as well, like i do, its really gets cheap. And Foma 100 gives very nice results. But i like the look of the FP4 or the Rollei retro 80S more! I´am going to get a 30,5m Roll of Rollei 80S next i think! Cheers Mat!

I agree with most of your assessment of the F3. As an eyeglass wearer i enjoy the HP. viewfinder. My secondary camera with fixed prism and easy flash connection is my OM 2 .

Sadly shipping to the US costs as much as the film effectively doubling the cost. 😢

Looks nice, but I wish they offered less expensive shipping to the USA. I bulk load FP4 already--it's a nice film and the finer grain is especially suited to half-frame photography. I usually use a yellow filter to bump up the contrast a bit.

Great news for the film blokes. ;o) I just posted a link for this to RangeFinderForum. Thanks for the heads-up. You always remember who your friends are. Hat's off for that. Back around the Franco-Prussian War I'd buy the 200' rolls of Tri-X and load it into cassettes with a loader. And process them myself of course. Later I would buy what was "ends" of packaged color cinema film in cassettes from a lab in LA. I'd send it back and get slides, prints and the negatives. As Kodak cine film it was pretty good stuff. There still may be these deals.

Interesting to see this. Back in the early 1980s I was a student in London with, of course, no surplus cash. In the back of "Amateur Photographer" there were lots of ads from suppliers of weird photo-stuff and I spotted somewhere selling Cine FP4 (no 'Plus' back then of course) for a very low price. The reel was 200ft so I loaded it into plastic cassettes by going in the loft at night and measuring 64 1/2" of film using a stick with two nails in. The perforations slipped over the nails, I cut the film with ordinary scissors, fixed it to a cassette core with sticky-tape, wound up the core, placed it in to the cassette-body and put the endcap on. The trickiest bit was sliding the film leader through the light-trap of the cassette from the open end, in the dark. With some practice it worked pretty well and I was able to shoot a lot more film than I would have been able to afford otherwise. Long live cine-film !

What would the cost of a regular B/W film be in the UK ?

Is there any resource regarding development times for this film?

One of my favorite B&W films. Beautiful tonality with very fine grain. Why are so many photographers fixated on Tri-X??? It's a grainy, mushy mess compared to FP4 or Plus-X.

I switched to Ilford years ago and I love it. They seem to really care about film photographers. Kodak can bite my crank. I live in the NYC area, and I buy it from B+H, with free shipping. No problems ever. For some reason old expired film from e*** cost more, at least in my experience.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem particularly accessible in the US, or widely available online. I've found excellent results with Kentmere 100 off of BH Photo US, which comes out to about $65-75 per 100 foot roll (or $3.61-$4.16 per 36 exposure roll) for unexpired film. A lot of people complain about the flat tone curve of Kentmere but I've found it easier to work with than higher end, high-contrast films like HP5 for scanning.

I have the LTM. A nice lens. I think I have reached my lens limit.

Does it have a good extended lock?. That one of the issues I find with some of my vintage collapsible Leica glass.

Great video. I agree completely and add; they have lost their way in cameras also, especially digital. I shoot with a IIIC my father bought in Linz Austria in 1946. The camera has had only one CLA and works perfectly despite heavy use throughout its life. Leica does not make anything today that will be functional in 76 years except for perhaps their non metered MA. They lack the imagination to devise a universal electronics platform that would allow for continuous upgrade of their digital and film cameras. Their service doesn’t have a great reputation either but it is not possible to service cameras for which parts are NLA after 5 years. Very unfortunate. I hope they can turn around and design digital and film cameras worthy of their reputation.

hello Matt, Would you consider making a video to discuss repair and reliability of digital Leica cameras? For those of us too poor to afford the newer ones (M10+) but also don’t want expensive repair bills. Is there any kind of data out there about out-of-warranty failure rates?

This might not be a *fair* test for the apo. The apo is designed for film and digital Leica M cameras. The SL has, I believe, a thicker IR filter in front of the image sensor that reduces image quality for non-telecentric lenses. Telecentric lenses are lenses where the light rays hit the sensor perpendicularly - which is not a requirement for film cameras at all. Because of this, the voigtlander may perform better on a Leica M camera than on an SL. The SL does support Leica M lenses but that doesn't mean it is optimal form them. You might find improved performance by adding a plano-convex 1500mm focal length lens in front of the lens. Philip Reeve suggests this in some cases. I have done some of my own simulation work and come to the same conclusions, but not with 50mm lenses (I only looked at 28mm lenses).

Great review. Best I have seen for a lens I truly want to add to my collection. Still would be willing to wait for the black version. Till then my Minolta M Mount 40 will do for my compact normal.

Hi Matt I was in Vagus last week. I have a 911 GT3 super car but not a Leica M11 would like one but in my 70's eyes not so good. I am getting a D-Lux 8 from Leica store near me. Good features better interface like the Leica Q great for travel will take it to Sweden & Norway next spring.

The lesser talked about Rollei 35 RF also provides 40mm frame lines! Fun looking camera based on the Bessa.

It's interesting that they came out with the two wide in the Simera line and suddenly jump to a new line for the "standard" lens. It will be cool to see them eventually fill out the typical focal lengths with Simera as I think they are quite interesting and innovative. I am not the biggest fan on how the Ultron 35mm render images, but it is permanently parked on my M240 when now in use because it has matching black paint!

Hello, I started macro with an FE, and switched to E screen for comfort. Also added the large rubber eyecap. The only issue with the camera, which I bought new in 1982, has been a sticky mirror on Bulb, and changing the foam on the back. Note that the FE will correctly meter at well over 1 sec, I have had good slide exposure at 30 secs! Love these cameras, thanks for posting 😎

can it be set to zone focus with this 59mm lens?

Thanks for the review! Very useful. So apart from the supplied slip on filter, how easy is it going to be to source and fit other coloured filters? And a clickless aperture? Is it easy to shift that accidentally?
